Hoodia Weight LossFor thousands of years the San tribesmen have been using a local cactus called Hoodia gordonii to suppress appetite. The plant is crucial to their survival in the harsh Kalahari Desert, since these men need go often on hunts that last for hours or even days.

They have to travel light because they need to travel fast and instead of lugging around a couple of days’ worth of food and run the risk of being slowed down or having the food go bad on them, they use an appetite suppressant.

And, while the men are on the hunt, women and children have to wait and to make do with whatever is at hand. Hoodia gordonii is a welcome addition to their diet, especially when the going gets tough.

But is it a good idea to rely on a cactus from Africa? Is it healthy to cut calories and eat every other day? How much is too much? The simple fact that the bushmen live like this, and have been living like this for centuries of years is proof enough that a low calorie diet is not a bad thing. 

Sure, bushmen are skinny people, but that’s how you want to look. Plus, you can stop taking the pills whenever you want. And if that’s not reason enough, BBC has recently published a piece of news that details scientific research on dieting monkeys. According to this study, cutting calories may delay the ageing process and reduce the risk of disease. And make no mistake, this was a 20-year study.

Calorie reduction offers more than just weight loss

stethoscopeEarlier this year, German researchers published the findings from their study of elderly people, which suggested that calorie reduction appeared to improve memory over a period of just three months.

Research on the positive effects of calorie restriction on the life spans of various organisms – from yeast to dogs – have been published over the last 70 years. Of course, what works for monkeys and yeast might not be a great idea for us, humans, but the principle is basically the same.

People who do try a low calorie diet with or without the help of Hoodia gordonii will have to take a hard look at their eating habits. They will have to commit themselves to a life of meaningful and nutritious produce. It is almost like having a bariatric bypass, but without the expensive surgery.

You can only eat so much and, in order to stay healthy, you have to eat real food. The kind of food that is nutritious in small amounts! Didn’t your mother tell you “Always eat your veggies!” when you were a kid? Mine sure did. And this is something that you certainly have to do. But there is more to a low calorie diet than eating vegetables.

Hoodia weight loss – The real deal

Another thing that matters is what kind of vegetables one eats. And let’s not forget that the San Tribe are meat eaters and they go to great lengths to get this product, which is not always easy to find in the desert. Fortunately, meat is not a problem for us – the quantity and the cuts we use is the real issue here.

In our ultra-fast paced, ultra-stressful society having time for ourselves is the hardest thing in world. But if we are committed to change, why not take advantage of the gift of nature that the San Tribe has been using for so long? It surely can’t hurt.
